Girls Just Want to Have Fun
Girls Just Want to Have Fun was released on April 12, 1985 - the same year I was born. Being a child of the 90s, but with parents who came of age in the 80s, much of my youth was influenced by 80s movies and music. Girls Just Want to Have Fun was a favorite of mine from my childhood. Starring Sarah Jessica Parker, Helen Hunt, and Shannen Doherty, it is a fun coming of age film.
When I was young I loved this movie because of Sarah Jessica Parker's character, Janey, I shy girl who loved gymnastics and dance. A girl who wanted to break out of her shell and become her own person. Now, as an adult, I can further appreciate the fact that this is essentially a "teen" film that has many "teen problems" but eliminates the need for sex, drugs, and booze to create conflict.
Janey is a sweet, innocent teenager, who hasn't disobeyed a single rule in her entire life. Upon meeting Lynne Stone (Helen Hunt), Janey decides to chase her dream of becoming a dancer on DanceTV. She makes new friends and relationships along the way.
A great movie of the 80s, Girls Just Want to Have Fun, is a fun filled adventure dealing with many teen issues - without using attention getting ploys (Sex, cheating, drugs, underage drinking) to convey a good, heartfelt story. I enjoyed this film greatly as a child, loved it as a teenager, and appreciate it in all new ways as an adult. It was a classic growing up in my house, and I hope that my daughter will someday enjoy this movies as well as I do.
If you enjoy(ed) Girls Just Want to Have Fun, you'll probably enjoy these other classic '80s films.
